Even professional essayists aren’t certain about what constitutes a lyric essay, and lyric essays disagree about what makes up the form.Lyric essay flourishes with the braiding of multiple themes, a back and forth weave of story and implication, the bending of narrative shape and insertion of poetic device such as broken lines, white space and repetition. It is one impression after another, unified by tone. And it seems to move in its own peculiar direction, neither vertical nor horizontal.
The report, the critique, the rumination, the lyric impression and the hard fact are all found in contemporary creative nonfiction writing. It is the mix of all these elements that make creative nonfiction an illuminating and moving form of historical documentary, as well as lovely literature.
The Creative Nonfiction (CNF) genre can be rather elusive. It is focused on story, meaning it has a narrative plot with an inciting moment, rising action, climax and denoument, just like fiction. However, nonfiction only works if the story is based in truth, an accurate retelling of the author’s life experiences.
A braided essay is a popular structure for creative nonfiction essays. Braided essays generally use 2-3 moments or topics and create an essay surrounding an event or question. While collage style essays are a personal favorite of mine, I love a good braided essay too like many readers.
